Episode 58: An Industry of Dreams | Immortal Works Press

On this week's dose of book recommendations, library love, and literary enthusiasm on The Library Laura Podcast, we talk with several members of the team over at Immortal Works, a unique indie publisher. Jason King (President), Beth Buck (Acquisitions Director) and Rachel Huffmire (Marketing Manager) tell me more about how Immortal Works got started, how they ended up a part of the team, and what they do in the "industry of dreams" that is the publishing world. We also have a great conversation about their interests in terms of reading and writing and swap some great recommendations. I look forward to sharing more interviews with Immortal Works authors in the future, as well!

About Immortal Works

Immortal Works is a unique publisher, providing high concept, quality fiction that breaks through genre tropes while keeping content PG-13 or lighter. That doesn’t mean our titles don’t have dark villains, irreverent humor, or thrilling romance. Readers can expect transportive stories that explore important topics without the risk of gratuitous elements. Immortal Works publishes Middle Grade, Young Adult, and General Fiction in every genre. You can find every one of our titles in print, eBook, and audiobook.

Books we mentioned on the Podcast

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

Bandersnatch: C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and the Creative Collaboration of the Inklings by Dr. Diana Glyer - recommended by Laura to Jason, Beth & Rachel based on conversation about Tolkien

Deleted by Ruth Mitchell - published by Immortal Works. Check out her episode 25 on The Library Laura Podcast.

Beth mentioned that she wrote "fan fiction" of the Dark Crystal movie.

Beth Buck is the editor on their bestselling fairytale anthology: Of Fae and Fate

Thomas Destiny by Jason King (and there's apparently an ameteur movie adaptation on Youtube?)

The Lure of Fools: The Age of the Infinite Omnibus by Jason King

Valcoria: Heroes of the Crystal Star by Jason King

Shattered Snow by Rachel Huffmire

Spinning Briar by Rachel Huffmire

Granted: Curse of the Emerald Jinn by Rachel Huffmire

The King's 100 by Karin Biggs

Wonderland by Miranda Renae'

Constantine Capers: The Pennington Perplexity by Nataline Brianne

Fly with Me by Julie Hahn

Bone Crier's Moon by Kathryn Purdie -- Rachel was currently reading

Conquest by Celeste Harte (sequel "Rising" is coming soon!)

Brandon Sanderson's Elantris and Warbreaker - Beth was enjoying reading recently

I Am Not a Serial Killer by Dan Wells

The Gate Thief by Orson Scott Card -- a little saltier than Immortal Works' standards... Beth was thinking "I would have to reject this" with a chuckle when she was reading.

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien  a favorite of Jason's.

Jason really likes the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher and just finished reading Battle Ground.

Jason also highly recommends the Wheel of Time series, which starts with The Eye of the World and the last three books were finished by Brandon Sanderson

Jay Barnson just finished his Blood Creek Witch series

Recommended Inn Between Podcast to Jason because of his interested in Dungeons & Dragons.

Recommended to Jason, Beth & Rachel: The Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson, starting with On The Edge of The Dark Sea of Darkness. Be sure to check out the audiobook versions narrated by the author, too.

Beth studied Arabic and did a study abroad in Egypt (during which she wrote a novel instead of getting better at Arabic like she was supposed to be doing!) so I shared with her the Persian books I read recently that I thought she might really appreciate:

Rosefire by Carolyn Clare Givens - published by Bandersnatch Books (coming soon!) another indie publisher. Check out Carolyn's episode 45 of The Library Laura Podcast

Rachel recommends Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016 film, produced by Taika Waititi) and The Map of Tiny Perfect Things as really enjoyable recent indie films.
